Haven't we heard this story before -- about 30 years ago?
At least, there was a happy ending in the song. I think the fact they each felt betrayed by the other is ironic and funny. They apparently think the same way, so maybe they are soulmates (if you believe in that sort of thing).

I have a friend that (after getting divorced) found her ex on yahoo personnals. So, she created a "stage name" and began conversations with him. They too, hit it off. However, instead of fessing up, she stopped the online contact and began calling him again. They are now back together (for over a year) and seem to be very happy.
She doesn't regret her little online fling, she is glad she got to know him from a different perspective.
Good for them!
